Who are these classes for?
These classes are for special needs and/or developmentally delayed children who are under the age of 3 and have learned how to walk. The classes are staffed by a special needs teacher and a certified childcare worker.
What is covered in these classes?
These sessions are held twice weekly. Children are enrolled in these classes with similarly abled children and are encouraged to participate in a greater range of activities than they typically encounter outside of the classroom. These include motor activities, sensory stimulation activities, table activities, receptive and expressive language activities and group activities. At each session, the child receives up to one hour of one on one instruction from the teacher focusing on areas of individual need. Children in the toddler classes also receive individual speech therapy sessions, which focus on receptive and expressive language skills training. Individual occupational therapy is also provided to focus on sensory integration and gross motor skills.
What are the fees for the Toddler Classes?
Fees for the toddler classes are HK $550 per month and include:
- 2 group sessions weekly which include up to one hour of one on one instruction per session.
- Weekly, individual sessions with speech therapist and occupational therapist.
- Biannual assessment and parent review session.
- Additional therapy and counseling sessions are available by appointment.
What is my involvement as a parent?
Watchdog believes that parents play an important role in the training of their children. Initially, parents are present in the toddler classes. Gradually, their direct involvement is reduced and they are encouraged to watch the classes from the observation rooms. Parents are provided with goals in the biannual assessment reports and they are expected to follow through at home with the activities taught at school. To reinforce the concepts learned at Watchdog, weekly home programmes are provided for each child.
