Thanks to Adam, Nouwen came to understand the central questions of Christian theology in a way that transcended all statements of belief, and instead found joy in the mere gift of human existence. --Michael Joseph Gross

The book also provides parents with useful coping strategies while focusing on ways to encourage children to reach their highest potential. Each chapter concludes with candid statements by parents that convey the pain and triumphs associated with this disorder. Title: Facing Autism: Giving Parents Reasons for Hope and Guidcane for Help
Author: Lyn M. Hamilton, Foreword by Bernard Rimland

Publisher: Golden Era, Beijing
Date of Publishing: March 2003
Format: Paperback

Code p-BA-E040
Summary: This is one mother's account of coping with her son's autism. Within two months of his diagnosis, Ryan began intensive Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and with his mother tackled other related issues, including immune deficiency, food intolerance, and obsessive-compulsive behaviors. Hamilton has investigated and tried many "alternative" therapies, most of which were not welcomed by the doctors she consulted. However, the results for Ryan have been very good. Husband Roger adds a chapter about a spouse/father's role in a family with special needs. Writing from a Christian perspective, Hamilton recounts her faith in God, which helps carry her through adversity. Each section of the book contains lists of resources (institutes, clinics, schools, and programs, with phone and FAX numbers, e-mail addresses, and web sites). This is a strong argument for ABA as well as dozens of other nontraditional approaches to a puzzling diagnosis.

Title: Making ADHD a Gift - Teaching Superman How to Fly
Author: Robert E. Cimera

Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc.
Date of Publishing: September 2002
Format: Paperback

Code p-BA-E042

Summary: Taking a somewhat different approach than most discussions of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Cimera (U. of Wisconsin at Oshkosh) suggests that not only can children with ADHD flourish, but that they can also turn the symptoms to their advantage. He argues that battles to repress the symptoms by parents and teachers are not necessary and frequently unproductive. After presenting an overview of ADHD, he provides methods for addressing inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and social skills. Next he discusses the development of broader strategies for teaching children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD and examines the development, implementation, and assessment of educational programs. Title: Can't Eat, Won't Eat - Distary Difficulties and Autistic Spectrum Disorder
Author: Brenda Legge

Publisher: Jessica Kingsley Publishers
Date of Publishing: November 30, 2001
Format: Paperback

Code p-BA-E045
Summary: In her book Can’t Eat, Won’t Eat Brenda Legge tells what it is like from a mother’s perspective to have a child with Asperger’s syndrome who won’t eat 99.9 per cent of all known food. Other parents, who contribute to this book, tell of the tremendous problems of living with a child with such a restricted diet. There can be no such thing as a leisurely excursion if you have a child with eating intolerances; it affects all the members of the family: restaurants are ‘out’. And holidays are not be a relaxing time for the mother of a faddy eater; even a self-catering holiday can mean that time is consumed by buying and preparing food which is acceptable. A mother of one seven-year old girl on the autistic spectrum who had a very meager diet to start with said, ‘She eats very little anyway, but if we go away from home, she can go for days without eating.’

Review: www.family200.org.uk
http://www.amazon.com

This book was filled mostly with anecdotes of other families and their struggles with food and autism. I was expecting more suggestions and things I didn't know or hadn't tried.
But it helped to know that we are not alone. And hearing from children and adults with autism was very helpful.
It really put things into perspective and knows that my children have fewer problems than others that physically get sick around "offensive" food.
Basically the biggest idea in this book was not to give up trying. Eventually you should see some improvement in your child's eating habits.

Title: Chilren with Starving Brains - A Medical Treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder
Author: Jaquelyn McCandless, MD

Publisher: Bramble Books
Date of Publishing: 2nd edition (January 1, 2003)
Format: Paperback

Code p-BA-E046
Summary: In the midst of a worldwide epidemic of autism, ADD, and ADHD, this book is a message of hope to parents embarking on the challenging journey of finding proper medical care for their Autism Spectrum Disorder children. Genetic susceptibility activated by "triggers" such as pesticides and heavy metals in vaccines can lead to immune system impairment, gut dysfunction, and pathogen invasion such as yeast and viruses in many children.
This is the first book written by an experienced clinician that gives a step-by-step treatment guide for parents and doctors based on the understanding that ASD is a complex biomedical illness resulting in significant brain malnutrition. Dr. McCandless, whose grandchild with autism has inspired her "broad spectrum approach," describes important diagnostic tools needed to select appropriate treatment programs. Her book explains major therapies newly available and identifies safe and effective options for parents and physicians working together to improve the health of these special children.

Review: http://www.amazon.com
If you are a parent of a child with Autism this book is an absolute must-have! Dr. McCandless' book is the most up-to-date guide on treating children with Autism biomedically. Her book is easily understandable and well writtten. I have followed the recommendations within her book to a "T" with my 26 month old ASD daughter. My daughter's response to these interventions have been nothing short of miraculous. Dr. McCandless is an absolute God send! **Please remember that everyone is different and that each individual will respond differently to these interventions**, but because these are so safe and easily adaptable - it is definitely worth giving it a try! My only regret is not getting this book sooner!

Title: Right from the Start: Behavioral Intervention for Young Children with Autism - A Guide for Parents and Professionals
Author: Jaquelyn McCandless, MD

Publisher: Woodbine House
Date of Publishing: 1 July, 1998
Format: Paperback

Code p-BA-E047

Summary: Written in an accessible and friendly style, Right from the Start explains how the teaching method known as intensive behavioral intervention (IBI) can benefit young children with autism and related disorders. This includes all children whose diagnosis falls within the broad spectrum of Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), especially those five and younger.
This guide begins by discussing applied behavioral analysis (ABA), the central component of intensive behavioral intervention. Readers learn how ABA can be used to teach speech and language, social, motor, and adaptive skills through a system of repetition, reward, and goal adjustment. The descriptions of a real-life family going through the process of understanding their young child's diagnosis and choosing an intensive behavioral intervention program bolster the confidence of other parents in making their own evaluations. And "parent statements" included in each chapter offer important empathy.
The authors also discuss what families should consider before choosing any treatment method for their child with autism, and specifically what key elements an IBI program should have. Curriculum, professional roles, parent involvement, inclusion, and the pros and cons of a home-based versus center-based program are all covered. A glossary of terms commonly used in autism research and education helps to demystify what at first seems like an intimidating subject. All in all, this practical and authoritative guide will save parents much time and worry in their search to help their young child with autism.
